There are a few reasons that people don’t travel, for some it’s a fear of flying (these people haven’t heard of boats) and for others it’s the sheer cost of accommodation once you get there.
There are many ways of cutting your expenses without cutting into the experience of where it is that you’re going. Let’s face it, if you plan on visiting some small village to get a cultural feel then staying in a five star hotel won’t give you what your truly looking for. Why not throw caution to the wind and stay with one of the villagers? Most times people will let you stay for free in exchange for a little laughter and cultural exchange.
Ok most of you have now fled to other pages and are gonna tell me that this is too far out of your comfort zone. For us this is the ultimate way to break down the racial and cultural barriers created by media hype.
We’ve talked about hosting in your own home via great sites like Couch Surfing in previous posts but have you considered helping out in exchange for lodging in far away places?Try this reat site http://www.workaway.info or what about volunteering in a place that needs aid?
http://volunteerabroad.com.au and http://globalworkandtravel.com.au are Australian based but there are plenty of site giving extensive information and you’re only limited by your own apprehension.
Drop your guard and leave your preconceived attitudes behind… go explore!
If you know of a great site where you can get free accommodation let others know by commenting here 🙂
Hi guys,
I wanted to say thank you for visiting my blog Sweet Sea and reading my blog post on the Tiger Temple. I see you guys are heading to Thailand soon too, I look forward to reading more blog posts from you guys! 🙂
In regards to this post, my partner and I have used Airbnb a couple of times, it’s a service that allows you to rent people’s homes/apartments/villas. It’s often cheaper than hotels and can be a great way to meet people.
Kindest,
Charlotte
Thanks so much for you beautiful comments Charlotte 🙂 we will be looking at the Air bnb site in more detail. Elea discovered the site some time back but with life we just got caught upwih the day to day stuff… Glad you dropped by the site.
I tried CouchSurfing for the first time this year and it was so easy. It’s a great way to meet people and I even got taken around Paris on a motorbike by my host! I’ve yet to try Workaway so thanks for the tip.
Hi Lisa, CouchSurfing is awesome and we too have a huge motorbike in the shed, so if you make it to Brisbane in Australia we can extend a ride offer to you 🙂 Glad to have you commenting on our site. – Wayne
